The Screenings

Wherever you are on the island, Ïle Courts Festival invites you to embark upon an exciting world tour at the heart of contemporary short filmmaking. Indoor or under the stars, the Festival’s screen spreads itself out this year in Rose Hill, Bagatelle, Port Louis, Chemin Grenier, Tamarin and Mahebourg, for all audiences. In addition to the Indian Ocean or International programmes, each screening is hosting:
    • a Mauritian film from the 2014 Festival’s productions for open air screenings
    • a Mauritian film written and directed by the students of the École du Nord, before each children’s programme
All the screenings are free.

In Mahebourg, an amphitheatre converts itself into an open-air picture house facing the sea. The programme consists of our great favourites of international short films, those that have tugged at our heartstrings; we cast a special eye on the African Metropolis Collection and the films that the Festival invitees have brought in their suitcases from New York and Toronto. Let yourself be carried away, for it’s the very last screening of the 7th edition of Île Courts Festival!

On the island of Mauritius, a few trees are trying to survive to their confrontration with Humans. Portrait of four of these beings full of life and resisting the erosion of the environment. Here, the fragile mangrove lives at the rhythm of the lagoon’s backwash. There, a stubborn filao faces the ocean. Further off, a generous banyan gives refuge to men, while an endemic palm tree suffers from the loneliness of being the last survivor of his species.

All in high relief!

The cherry on the cake this year is a screening of short films in 3D! The association Prenez du relief, which organises the Courant 3D Festival in Angouleme, militates for the development and diffusion of 3D short films. The goal here is not to make 3D just for the sake of making 3D, but to promote cinematic stories to which this technology brings a new dimension of meaning. Watch out, the future is already here!

Of an urban atmosphere at l’Atelier littéraire of Port Louis, for a feature-length Malagasy documentary, to meet its director and the Malagasy Way of Life. Or of an evening of short films and picnic blankets under the stars of Chemin Grenier in the garden of the village church, as near as possible to the filming location of La Leçon d’Anglais.



The screening will be followed by an open discussion with the director and producer of the film, all in a casual and friendly atmosphere. The bar of l’Atelier will be open for the evening, which will be an occasion to prolong the conversation.

Île Courts 2014

Île Courts Festival is a real little film factory! Tonight, the 2014 Collection will be screened, the four latest productions of the Festival, fiction films as well as documentaries.

Put into place by the association Porteurs d’Images, the Film Fabrik program has been, since 2008, offering Mauritian writers/directors the technical, financial and logistical means to produce their film, from the stage of writing to that of screening. To this day, 28 short films have this way been produced in 5 collections. Film Fabrik defines itself by its passionate drive to support the emergence of a unique cinema, one that is emblematic of our region yet capable of reaching horizons much beyond our own.

The screening will be followed by a free and open discussion with the public, in the presence of the directors.
